Your VAT return and payment are due within 28 days of the end of each tax period. Since 14 April 2026, a late payment costs 14% a year on the unpaid tax, and every return error you find later can cost 1% a month until you disclose it. Most UAE VAT return mistakes are not exotic. They come from the same few transactions, set up wrongly once and repeated every quarter.

What UAE VAT return mistakes cost under the 2026 penalty regime
Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2025 rewrote the administrative penalties from 14 April 2026. The headline changes for VAT registrants, as summarised by Al Tamimi, Crowe, Andersen and Deloitte, are:
- Late payment: 14% a year on unpaid tax, applied monthly from the day after the due date. It replaces the old 2% plus 4% monthly structure.
- Late filing: AED 1,000 for the first late return, AED 2,000 for a repeat within 24 months.
- Incorrect return: AED 500 for a first violation, higher for repeats. It does not apply if you correct by the due date, or by voluntary disclosure where there is no tax difference.
- Voluntary disclosure: 1% a month on the tax difference, from the original due date until you submit the disclosure.
- Missed disclosure before an audit: a fixed 15% of the tax difference, plus the 1% monthly penalty.
- Tax invoices and credit notes: AED 2,500 for each case where one is not issued.
The message is simple. Errors now cost money every month they sit unnoticed, so finding them before filing matters more than ever.
Reverse charge on imported services
When you buy services from a supplier outside the UAE, you usually account for the VAT yourself. You report it as output tax and, where you can recover it, claim the same amount as input tax.
The common mistake is booking the foreign bill with no tax at all. The return then understates both boxes, which is still an incorrect return. From 1 January 2026, Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2025 removed the self-invoice requirement for reverse charge, but you must keep the supporting documents.
In Odoo, the fix is a fiscal position for foreign service suppliers. It maps the purchase tax to a reverse charge tax that posts both sides, so the accountant cannot forget it.
Designated zones and blocked input tax
Designated zones are a frequent source of wrong tax codes. Goods moving between designated zones, or into one from abroad, can fall outside UAE VAT if the conditions are met. Services supplied in a designated zone are taxed like any other UAE supply. Goods moving from a zone to the mainland are treated as an import.
Not every free zone is a designated zone, so check the FTA's current list for each customer and supplier. Then use separate fiscal positions rather than one generic "free zone" setting.
Blocked input tax is the second trap. VAT on entertainment for customers or staff is generally not recoverable. Neither is VAT on motor vehicles available for personal use, apart from listed exceptions such as taxis and rental fleets.
In Odoo, create dedicated non-recoverable purchase taxes and default them on the relevant expense accounts and products. That keeps blocked tax out of the input tax box from the start.
Credit notes, tax invoices and the timing of supply
Errors in documents flow straight into the return. A tax invoice must generally be issued within 14 days of the date of supply. It needs the words "Tax Invoice", your TRN and the other mandatory details.
Typical problems we see:
- Invoices cancelled or edited instead of corrected with a credit note that references the original.
- Credit notes dated in the wrong period, so output tax is reduced too early or too late.
- Advance payments with no invoice, although a payment received can set the date of supply.
- Goods delivered in one quarter and invoiced in the next, putting the tax in the wrong return.
Odoo 19 helps here. Posted invoices are locked, credit notes link to the source invoice, and the tax lock date stops anyone posting into a period you have already filed.

Rounding, small differences and voluntary disclosure
Rounding differences look trivial, but they make your general ledger disagree with the VAT report. Pick one rounding method in Odoo (per line or global) and keep it consistent across sales, purchases and POS.
When you find a past error, the size of the error decides the route. Under the Tax Procedures executive regulation, an error that changes payable tax by more than AED 10,000 needs a voluntary disclosure. Smaller errors can generally be corrected in the return for the period in which you find them. The regulation was amended from 1 April 2026, so confirm the current route with your adviser before you file.
Our Finance & VAT advisory team handles reviews and disclosures alongside the Odoo fix, so the same error does not return next quarter.
Odoo pre-filing checklist for every VAT return
Run these steps before you export the UAE VAT Return report from Odoo:
- Check the tax report mapping. Confirm every active tax feeds the right box of the UAE VAT Return report, including reverse charge, import and zero-rated taxes.
- Reconcile the VAT accounts. Output and input VAT balances in the general ledger must match the report totals for the period.
- Audit fiscal positions. Review foreign suppliers, designated zone partners and exempt customers, and confirm each has the correct fiscal position.
- Review blocked input tax. Filter entertainment and vehicle expenses and confirm they use the non-recoverable tax.
- Match credit notes to invoices. Every credit note should reference an original invoice and sit in the right period.
- Check unbilled deliveries and advances. Look for deliveries not yet invoiced and payments received with no invoice.
- Set the tax lock date. Once filed, lock the period so no one changes it afterwards.
A finance dashboard that flags these exceptions saves hours each quarter. We cover what to track in dashboards finance teams actually use.
Why clean VAT data matters for e-invoicing
The UAE is moving to mandatory e-invoicing, which will put your invoice data in front of the FTA much faster. Read what UAE e-invoicing in 2027 means for your business for the deadlines and the role of ASPs.
Fixing VAT mapping now is also the first step in getting Odoo ready for UAE e-invoicing. The same discipline supports UAE Corporate Tax in Odoo, since both rely on the same ledger.
Frequently asked questions
When is a UAE VAT return due?
The return and the payment are both due within 28 days of the end of your tax period, according to the FTA.
What is the penalty for a late VAT payment in 2026?
From 14 April 2026, late payment attracts 14% a year on the unpaid tax, applied monthly from the day after the due date.
Do I still need a self-invoice for reverse charge?
No. From 1 January 2026, the self-invoice requirement was removed, but you must keep the supporting documents for the supply.
Can Odoo file my VAT return with the FTA?
Odoo 19 produces the UAE VAT Return report in the FTA format and exports it to Excel or PDF. You then submit it on the FTA portal.
Next step
If your last return needed manual adjustments, the cause is usually in the setup, not the people. A short review of taxes, fiscal positions and mapping usually finds it.
